Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. While initial symptoms are mild and often painless, research links gum disease to increased risk for stroke and other diseases. Some dentists believe up to 80 percent of Americans have some level of gum disease.
Diabetics, smokers, people who grind their teeth, and those who experience extreme stress are at a higher risk for periodontal disease. Be sure to inform our hygienist if you fall into any of these categories. As part of your first exam, she will gently probe your gums and look for signs of gum disease. If your brushing and flossing techniques aren't doing the job, the hygienist can share simple tips to make your daily oral care easy and effective.
If you have periodontal disease, we may recommend changes to your homecare routine or a deep cleaning in our office. Deep cleaning involves scaling, a procedure that removes tartar buildup beneath the gum line. Keeping this area free of trapped food particles and bacteria is key in preventing gum disease. To smooth rough areas on tooth roots, where plaque tends to build up, the hygienist may plane your teeth's roots. Arestin, an antibiotic that we apply directly to effected gums, will destroy bacteria and infection. For advanced periodontal disease, the dentist will refer you to a specialist, called a periodontist.
As your restorative and general dentist, Dr. Harris wants to help you achieve maximum oral heath. Our Temple office is convenient to surrounding areas, like Belton, Nolanville, and Killeen. If you have not been to the dentist in six months or more, call for an appointment today.
