Most of the technology used in dentistry today is recent, but nitrous oxide has been around for more than 200 years! Discovered in 1790 by a British chemist, nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, gives a patient a strong desire to smile or laugh. Combined with a local anesthetic, like Novocain, nitrous keeps most patients comfortable during treatment. The patient is awake, alert, and able to respond to the dentist, but very relaxed.
